lines written at home on the 4th of July 2023

i am here on the back porch. the humidity is low and there was morning rain. but now except for the birds, there is just the evening silence and the twilight getting darker.

a war film screening on my laptop. the sound of explosions and death cries with the words of patriotic speech while i conduct some random research on the best psychedelic songs. hendrix. jefferson airplane. cream. grateful dead. while writing and revising new haiku and tanka and other short verses.

and then eventually, there is another explosion below the tree line. and then the fireflies come out to join me and witness all the colors and sparkles in the night sky.

after the fireworks
the weight of sleep
brings me back down
and up into
a loud dream
