One Step at a Time

We have a shared system of worrying. He takes care of the big ones and I handle the small ones.

His worry jobs: Will we start another war? Is the President/Supreme Court/Congress doing something stupid? Will this be the hottest year ever? Will we have to buy a new car that costs more than we make in a year? Will the house fall down because termites have eaten away all the support? Will her cancer come back?

My worry jobs: Will the car start today? Did I write the letter I promised? Will my Christmas cactus bloom in time for Christmas? Is the shopping list complete? Did I say/do/think/ something that hurt one of my friends/children/grands? Will I manage to sleep through my usual two hours of worry time? Will my cancer come back?

a breeze
through the highest branches
sun shadows
across an unfamiliar path
that I thought I knew
