Theater

After an evening of Restoration comedy, I step out into the noise and light of the West End and hurry toward Piccadilly Circus for the train back to the suburbs, when, as the crowds thin, I notice a man following me—his shadowy figure persisting in the periphery of my vision—no, not again, I think, as I zigzag a detour into Soho and lose him in a maze of alleyways, then reach the station near the statue of Eros forever taking aim at the tourists, and pop into the loo where a dwarf standing on a box is drinking out of the washbasin.
