I’m an old woman now—settled. Some might say eccentric. No matter—I like my life; lot of folks aren’t that lucky. I’ve got my routine. Up at 7 a.m. to heat the kettle for a cup of honeyed tea, paired with toast and jam. Maggie, a rescue kitty from a shelter, yawns and stretches. We’re going on twelve years. We putter about the house. She naps, I do crossword puzzles; I nap, she solves crimes on TV. We watch gameshows together, both of us certain we’d win if we ever got to play. At bedtime I dim the lamps, and we curl up—two commas under patchwork quilts.
