lucky

i was against my brother Daniel bringing home a new cat. i figured his name was a cover-up for the fact that he was a diva. wanting inside every two minutes. then wanting outside. pawing at my feet when he wanted extra food in his bowl. or just attention. not caring if i was going up the stairs or down. or carrying a heavy load. or meowing at night outside my bedroom door. when he didn’t want to sleep alone.

but i can’t deny that there were days. when it was nice to have another face to talk to. when i was feeling anxiety or depression. worrying about bills to pay. or a prescription delivery. or having a whiskey session. often joining me in company with my mother’s urn. in one-sided conversations. where most of the time, he just stared. as if to say to me. “You know the answer to your own question.”
