Evan Vandermeer
Far from the Tree
For him, letters and numbers have colors, such that when he opens books the pages blaze blues and yellows and reds. It’s why he took up drawing, and why, when he got good enough, he began recreating famous artworks using nothing but thousands of minuscule characters. Viewed at arm’s length, his gray, penciled Mona Lisa thus appears a convincing replica of the original. But no one sees what he sees.
