Unspoken

We pretend everything is ok. A hug at the door, a cheery greeting. I help her with the dishes; she washes, I dry. We discuss the potted plant cutting growing in a glass of water on the kitchen window ledge, and how hardy it is. I tell her of a new recipe for Thai pumpkin soup and I promise to bring her some. She shares her thoughts on the novel she is reading. We chat about the heavy rain due on Friday. Everything but the elephant in the room.
