Michael Dylan Welch
Local Hero
One of my all-time favourite movies. You’re either into the droll humour or you’re not. As a Brit now living in America, I still pine for the nostalgic story and stunning scenery in this movie, which I was first turned onto because Mark Knopfler did the soundtrack. I saw it in a theatre near St. Paul’s Cathedral in London in the fall of 1983, in the last showing of the night. I was the only person in the entire theatre and watched right to the end of the credits (while Knopfler played a guitar instrumental), waved a goodnight thank-you to the projectionist up in the booth, and then walked in a light rain to Waterloo Station to catch my train home.
