My Transition

I exit a church I’ve attended for over a decade, due to doctrinal differences.  The new church I find isn’t fundamentalist Baptist.

In a dark room, lit with purple and teal nightclub lights, drumbeats pulsate as swanky electric guitar strains join a praiseful melody.  Song leaders zealously intonate to cast every demon back into the pit …

After the service ends, as I stand on the polished concrete floor with an usher, I ask a few questions, to get a better idea of the place and to consider how I might contribute my time and talents.

“Most of us carry guns,” he tells me.  “We’ll do anything to protect the people here.”

Sadly, I’m less surprised by this protocol to carry arms than I should be.  That our society, our world, would come to this?
