it won't be the same without the elephants; eventually the lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) will go, and the trained seals. no longer an oddity the tattooed lady will also find herself among the unemployed. but they'll survive and we'll survive and so will the circus. ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages will keep coming, the trapeze artists will thrill them, the clowns make them laugh. e e cummings put it best: "damn everything but the circus."
