State of the Art: KYSO Flash 2016 (Anthology #3)

Editor Clare MacQueen has announced the release of the third annual KYSO (Knock Your Socks Off) Flash Anthology. The 301-page volume, with 145 works by 100 artists and authors can be purchased through the KYSO Flash “Books” page.

Genres included are Haibun, Tanka Prose and Haiga, Flash and Micro-Fiction, Prose Poems and Poetry, Visual Arts and Nonfiction, and Ekphrastic works.

KYSO Flash is one of the few non-haiku genre journals that carries haibun and tanka prose along with other short-form genres. Because Haibun and Tanka Prose are closely related to Prose Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction, and Flash Fiction, each genre section will be of interest to Haibun and Tanka Prose poets. Good writing, particularly from these closely-related genres, is both instructive and inspirational to haibunists.

The haibun, tanka prose and haiga sections contain 56 works including a special presentation of 6 ekphrastic pieces by Charles D. Tarleton.

The volume also contains the work of winners, finalists, and semi-finalists of two writing challenges sponsored by KYSO Flash last year (Triple-F and Haibun and Tanka Prose).

Matthew Paul, Co-Editor of Presence, the British haiku journal, served as adjudicator for the Haibun and Tanka Prose contest. Winners and Honorable Mentions are: Janet Lynn Davis, Claire Everett, Sidney Bending, Sheila Sondik, Ray Rasmussen and Roberta Beary. Semi-finalists are: Elizabeth Alford, Claire Everett, Urszula Funnell, Bill Gottlieb, Charles Hansmann, Carol Judkins, Marjorie Kennedy, Beverly Acuff Momoi, and Gabriel Patterson.

HTP Publisher’s Choice awardees within both genres include haibun by Kelsey Dean, Debbie Strange, and Ryan Jessup.

CHO Editor Bob Lucky won Third Prize in the Triple-F competition where writers were required to use the words “fierce,” “flicker,” and “fool” in a genre of their choice.

KYSO Flash editors nominate pieces for The Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net Anthology, and Best Small Fictions. The anthology carries the work of all nominees. Pieces by Harriot West and Dan Gilmore have been placed in the forthcoming Best Small Fictions annual.
