Lakshmi Iyer
Simple Things
Father hurries home from work and asks us to pack our belongings. He has booked two train tickets for the four of us. Mother silently nods her head. Another long journey from Surat, Gujarat to Kerala. We love traveling to our hometown, but it’s tiresome. Half of the train journey is in the unreserved compartment. Sometimes we sleep on the floor beside the berth. But, no complaints. Who wouldn’t love peeking through the open window to watch the train taking a curve, count the compartments, wave at another passing train, travel through long dark tunnels and marvel at the tiny waterfalls trickling down the Western Ghats?

I love your haiku at the end.
Thanks Kala
This is a beautiful still life from the days of my childhood. I share that with you. Train journeys and their distinct smell, the arrangement of sounds, the chatter all were brought alive. Thank you.
