The train is full and she strains to listen to the cacophony of sounds around her. Laughter from the animated lady across the aisle. A young couple engaged in earnest discussion. Schoolgirls in uniform jostle one another and erupt into giggles. A man on his phone punctuates his conversation with jerking gestures. The noise should be deafening, but everything—including the cars barreling down the tracks—is just a hummed undertone she hears as whispers.
