Flight

Perched on the mantel, the crow carved from a block of oak seems about to fly. Dark lacquered wings gleam from the light of wood chips burning in the hearth. As I stroke the feathers, I can't believe that this bird had once been a tree.

North wind
through bare branches
a flurry of stars
