I drive to the lakeside again before dawn to scribble out my morning pages, read...spend a few minutes in quiet solitude before the day begins...

crossing dark water
a tiny wake

Reading Mary Oliver by car light, my brain still stiff with sleep, I think I need a cup of coffee but decide to walk down the beach instead...

first light
the rabbit’s breakfast

The mallards’ hearty splashing celebrates the new day. Footprints in the sand have shifted to non human circles, as if this beach has only ever had hoofed visitors.

morning chill…
disappearing behind reeds
ducks’ murmur
