A snake hisses across the path in Arizona. Frank Lloyd Wright's home away from home is splendid. We take the tour. Only the plants are sour. There is a batch of freshly cooked cookies in the window. The piano is outdoors. The notes echoing across fields of cacti and trees. We almost trip, mentally and physically, so we tie our shoes in the sullen heat.

A wind tunnel, a
snake hisses hysterically–
a missing footstep.
