two hands

going to towpath workshops right after my marriage ended was not easy. most times i would sit apart and listen to other poets. i had nothing to give. and i didn't think that anyone had anything to give me. i was wrong. especially about anita. at one towpath meeting early on she held my hand and didn't say anything. it felt good not to talk. just to sit close to someone and feel the warmth of hands around mine. and it helped. a lot. i don't know how anita knew that but she did. holding hands for a few extra seconds became our way of greeting each other. right up to the towpath meeting this april. her last.

after long rain
a deep stillness
in the garden
